What is KMLCSV Converter?

KMLCSV Converter - Softpedia "100% FREE" Award

KMLCSV Converter is a tool that enables you to convert the KML file generated from Google Earth (free version) into a formatted CSV file (and vice versa). This CSV file can then be uploaded into your Garmin GPS by using Garmin POI Loader, which can be downloaded for free. This allows you to plot all the custom point of interests (POI) with Google Earth first. Then, you can transfer all the custom POIs into your Garmin GPS. For further instruction in how to use to do so, please refer to the Tutorial.

I have tried the generated CSV file with my Garmin GPS (nuvi 350) and it works. I reckon it will also work in other Garmin models based on the information in the product website. Basically, this tool parses out name, description, longitude and latitude from a KML file. Then, it formats the data so that the Garmin POI Loader knows how to read the information. Finally, it saves the formatted data into a CSV file. The description field of the KML file is an optional field and it is placed in the comment field of the CSV file.

Graphical User Interface (GUI) Edition VS Command Line Interface (CLI) Edition

Graphical User Interface (GUI) Edition

  • Only works in Windows environment.
  • Ability to convert from KML to CSV and vice versa.
  • Ability to edit the file content at the last minute.
  • Nice release update checker feature.

Command Line Interface (CLI) Edition

  • Should be cross-platform compatible.
  • Currently, only able to convert from CSV to KML.
  • No release update checker feature. You have to constantly check this site for updates. Or, you can monitor this project through SourceForge. This way, when new release is out, I can notify you for updates.
  • Ability to specify icon path and icon scale in CSV file. This way, you can set up your custom icons to appear in Google Earth. This feature currently only exists in CLI edition.
  • Only converts from CSV to KML at this moment. When time permits (or more users request), I will implement the conversion from KML to CSV.

I recently received a few reported "bugs" that this tool won't run properly (or automatically closes with error message). Please note that this tool requires at least JRE 6.x to run. Most computers comes with the built-in JRE 1.4, thus you are bound to get an error when running this tool.

SOLUTION: Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp. Then, download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Finally, restart your computer and try the tool again.

Why Use It?

Well, it is free !!! You do not have to pay annual fee to get Google Earth Plus to do the same thing. I have seen some posted solutions in the web where the KML file is converted into CSV file by using XSLT. While it works, it is also pretty manual and painful in the sense that you have to make minor changes in the KML file. Some sites even charge for the conversion tool which I find it really ridiculous.
