What is Google Earth KML/CSV Converter?

Google Earth KML/CSV Converter is a tool that enables you to convert the KML file generated from Google Earth (free version) into a formatted CSV file. This CSV file can then be uploaded into your Garmin GPS by using Garmin POI Loader, which can be downloaded for free. This allows you to plot all the custom point of interests (POI) with Google Earth first. Then, you can transfer all the custom POIs into your Garmin GPS. For further instruction in how to use to do so, please refer to the Tutorial.

I have tried the generated CSV file with my Garmin GPS (nuvi 350) and it works. I reckon it will also work in other Garmin models based on the information in the product website. Basically, this tool parses out name, address, longitude and latitude from a KML file. Then, it formats the data so that the Garmin POI Loader knows how to read the information. Finally, it saves the formatted data into a CSV file. The address field of the KML file is an optional field and it is placed in the comment field of the CSV file.

Why Use It?

Well, it is free !!! You do not have to pay annual fee to get Google Earth Plus to do the same thing. I have seen some posted solutions in the web where the KML file is converted into CSV file by using XSLT. While it works, it is also pretty manual and painful in the sense that you have to make minor changes in the KML file. Some sites even charge for the conversion tool which I find it really ridiculous.

Possible Enhancements

Currently, this tool only converts from KML format to CSV format. What I would like in the future is the ability to convert from CVS format into KML format. I do not have a time frame for this development. However, if you are also interest in having this feature, please specify them at https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=187921. This would help me to justify my time to work on this enhancement earlier.
